LIQUID PENETRANT TESTING

The Penetrant Method/Process in its simplest form is carried out by applying a Liquid Penetrant Material to the surface under test and leaving it in contact for a predetermined time. All excessive Penetrant is removed and a coating of Developer material is applied for another process contact time followed by inspection for indication of flaws caused by the Penetrant bleed out. The main limiting factor with Penetrant Testing (PT) is that the flaw/discontinuity must break open at the surface. The method is mostly used for non Ferro-magnetic materials including; Aluminium, Brass/Copper, Nickel Alloys, Titanium and some Stainless Steels.

Ultra Violet Light is used to inspect Fluorescent indications revealed by both the Penetrant And Magnetic Methods.

The Crack Detection Methods available at AEP will meet most International and National standards and specifications.

Fluorescent Penetrant is very sensitive and is capable of revealing a pore in a material which cannot be seen by the naked eye.

At AEP the following Penetrant technique/systems are available:

  • Fluorescent Post Emulsifiable Penetrants (levels 2 and 3)
  • Fluorescent Water Washable Penetrant (level 2)
  • Red Colour Contrast Penetrant.
